Back-and-Forth Effort Comes Up Short for Steelheads in Kingston
KINGSTON, ON – The Steelheads were on the road Friday night to take on the Kingston Frontenacs at Slush Puppie Place. Despite a hard-fought effort, Brampton couldn’t hold on, falling 6-3.
It was a mild start to the game, with limited action in the first five minutes as both teams were held to three shots apiece.
Some feisty action followed at 6:49, as Steelheads forward Peter Green was assessed a two-minute minor for checking to the head, sending the Frontenacs to the power play.
The power play came to an end at 8:32 when Kingston’s Matthew Henderson was assessed a four-minute double minor for high sticking, sending Brampton to the man advantage. However, the Steelheads were unable to capitalize.
At 13:47, the Trout sent Kingston to its second power play of the night when William Eggleton was called for hooking. However, the Frontenacs were unable to capitalize, keeping the game scoreless.
It was more of the same for the remainder of the period, as both teams struggled to generate offense. Tensions rose late in the frame when Nolan Snyder was called for slashing, giving the Steelheads a power-play opportunity heading into the second period.
With Kingston holding a 9-5 edge in shots through one period, both teams were looking to strike first and open the scoring.
The Trout didn’t waste any time capitalizing on a costly Kingston penalty, as Troy Patton broke the ice just 29 seconds into the period. Patton scored the first goal of the game at 0:29, with assists from Carter Hicks and Zach Nyman.
At 15:35 of the period, Manuel Amado sent the puck over the glass, resulting in a two-minute delay of game penalty and giving Kingston a power-play opportunity.
Just 11 seconds later, at 15:46, the Frontenacs capitalized on the opportunity, as Tomas Pobezal scored to tie the game at 1-1.
At 18:40, the Frontenacs were given another power-play opportunity when Justin Bottineau was called for a two-minute minor for high sticking. This time, Kingston was unable to convert.
Despite both teams getting on the board and the game remaining back and forth through two periods, the pace was slow and neither side was able to seize momentum. Just seven total shots were recorded in the second period, with Kingston holding a slight 4-3 edge. Both teams entered the final frame looking to generate more energy and pull away in the tight contest.
Just a few minutes into the third period, at 3:29, Tomas Pobezal scored his second goal of the game to give Kingston a 2-1 edge.
Not long after, at 5:01, William Eggleton scored the equalizer off an assist from Carter Hicks.
At 7:27, things turned promising for the Steelheads as Troy Patton scored his second goal of the game, finding the back of the net to give Brampton a 3-2 lead.
The back-and-forth action continued, as Vann Williamson beat Luke Johnson to tie the game once again, making it 3-3.
The stakes continued to rise, and it showed in the physical play. At 10:53, Landon Wright was called for hooking, sending Brampton to the power play. However, just as the advantage was set to expire, Mason Roy was called for holding at 12:42, giving Kingston the man advantage.
Despite having strong momentum, Brampton could not hold off the strong offensive attack of Kingston following two back to back goals. At 16:32, Matthew Frost would score to take the lead, and at 16:56, Landon Wright would score to extend the lead by 2 goals, making it 5-3.
At 18:54, Nolan Snyder added another goal for Kingston, helping the Frontenacs secure the 6-3 victory.
