SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Overtime Heartbreaker
MISSISSAUGA, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads lost 6-5 in overtime to the Sudbury Wolves in a wild game.
Kocha Delic’s hat trick was the difference in the game, and the Wolves win sees them take a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Trout.
Goals from Angus MacDonell, Marc Boudreau, Chas Sharpe, Luke Misa, and Lucas Karmiris weren’t enough to lift the Steelheads to victory. Ryerson Leenders saved 14 shots before exiting the game due to injury, and Jack Ivankovic made 24 saves in relief.
Evan Konyen scored two goals to go along with Delic’s three, and David Goyette added a tally as well. Jakub Vondras made 28 saves in the win.
MacDonell got the Steelheads on the board early in the game, shoveling a centering pass from Misa into the top shelf from his backhand.
The Wolves answered back to tie five minutes later, with Delic converting on a 5 on 3 power play opportunity.
Mississauga took the lead back at 9:21 when Boudreau found space in the slot and wired a wrist shot past Vondras and in.
After three straight Sudbury penalties, the Trout converted on a 5 on 3 power play opportunity of their own. Sharpe fired a one time pass from Jakub Fibigr home to double the Steelhead lead.
Ivankovic relieved Leenders in goal for Mississauga eight minutes into the second period.
Konyen cut the Sudbury deficit in half with a top shelf shot on a 2 on 1 break at 8:57 of the second period.
Misa answered back just 20 seconds later when he snatched Porter Martone’s rebound out of the air in front and buried a shot past Vondras.
Another 2 on 1 opportunity led to Sudbury’s third goal, which saw Goyette keep the puck and fire a shot off the post and past Ivankovic.
Delic equalized for the Wolves halfway through the third period, when his turnaround wrist shot deflected off a body in front and found its way past Ivankovic.
Karmiris put Mississauga back in front with just over two minutes remaining when he came off the wall and fired a shot over the shoulder of Vondras and in.
The Wolves tied the game with the net empty with just one minute remaining. Konyen’s one time shot from the point found its way in through traffic.
