Spitfires Fall to Soo 5-2, Eliminated from Playoff Contention
The Spitfires came into Saturday night needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Spitfires are exactly 14 points out with 7 games to play so a tiebreaker would needed to be held if the Firebirds cannot win down the stretch. The Spitfires were coming in off a wild overtime loss that saw 17 combined goals in a 9-8 loss. The Soo have been red-hot as of late winning their last 4 of 5 games and a win last night over the Guelph Storm 3-1.
In the first period, it took just ten seconds for the Spitfires to strike. Abraham got the puck behind the Soo goal and passed it in front to Greentree who scored 33rd of the season. The Soo would respond on the powerplay to tie the game at one 14 minutes later. The Soo would dominate the period with a few powerplay chances but the Spitfires held on to the tie going into the second period. The shots were 21-6 in favour of the Soo after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Soo would score just 56 seconds into the period to take a 2-1 lead. Halfway through the period, the Soo would extend their lead to 3-1 with a goal on the powerplay. The shots were 34-9 after two periods of play.
In the third period, the Spitfires would cut the lead to 3-2 as Spellacy scored his 18th. The Soo would respond with two goals and take a 5-2 lead. That would do it as the Spitfires tried to mount a comeback but could not muster anything. The Spitfires have missed the playoffs for the first time since 2013-14.
The Spitfires have six more games to play with the next one on Thursday at home. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
