Game Story: Spitfires Win Wild Game 11-7 over Sudbury
WINDSOR, ON.
The Spitfires were looking to avenge a lopsided loss to the Saginaw Spirit their last time out. The Spirit dominated the play and took it to the Spitfires winning convincingly. On Saturday the number one Sudbury Wolves were in town to take on the Spitfires. They also loaded up at the deadline looking to make a run for an OHL Championship. They added Peterborough’s captain in McCoy, Brantford’s #2 d in Noah Van Vilet, and the Firebirds captain Zacharie Giroux. The Spitfires were in for another tough test, and ultimately succeeded with a huge win; 11-7 over the visiting Wolves.
In the first period, it was all Spitfires, it was an unbelievable period as they dominated the play and got out to a big lead. They scored four goals in the first 8:30 of the game to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Goals from Abraham twice and then followed up by Zhugin and Smith had the boys rolling. The Wolves would respond with one of their own to make it a 4-1 game halfway through the period. With a few seconds left, Spellacy was sprung on a breakaway and was hooked on the play and given a penalty shot. He went in and sniped it top shelf to give the Spitfires a 6-2 lead going into the intermission.
In the second period, Sudbury got lucky as they got a little bit undisciplined and the Spitfires were sent to the box for some questionable calls, including a bench minor. The momentum went all the Wolves way and they clawed back with two goals within 40 seconds. Late in the period, the Spitfires would get a powerplay and convert on it. Spellacy had a great solo effort and went backhand top shelf for his 2nd of the evening and the Spitfires had a 7-4 lead. Shots were 24-18 in favour of the Wolves after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the scoring on both sides would continue with seven goals between the two teams. The Wolves made it a 7-5 game just 38 seconds into period three. Halfway through the period, the Spitfires would restore the three goal lead, shorthanded. Greentree broke in over the blue line and his shot went wide but caromed off the end boards to Spellacy who potted home his third of the evening and first career hat-trick. A minute and a half later, the Wolves would convert on the powerplay to make it a 8-6 game. Three minutes later, the Spitfires were able to restore the three goal lead with a Walton point shot deflecting off Morneau and Nesbitt into the net.
