In Belleville, rookie forward Stephen Johnston scored the winning goal early in the first period to lift the Bulls to a 4-1 win over the Peterborough Petes in the opening game of their Eastern Conference playoff series on Wednesday.
Andy Self opened the scoring for Belleville on a powerplay early in the first period and Nigel Williams added a goal later in the frame. P.K. Subban iced the win with an empty-net goal in the final second of the game.
“It’s a big win at home,” said Bulls’ defenceman Shawn Lalonde, who picked up an assist and was the first star of the game. “They aren’t going to quit. We’ve got to work hard and outwork them. We have to keep playing as a team and we’ll be OK.”
Bulls’ goalie Mike Murphy, who posted the league’s best goals against average in the regular season, made 25 saves and was the second star in the win.
Branislav Rehus scored on a second period powerplay for the Petes while Trevor Cann made 29 saves in the loss.
The series continues on Thursday in Peterborough.
