Bob Gainey (1971-1973)
One of the greatest players to ever come out of the Peterborough Petes maroon and white uniform. Bob Gainey only played two seasons here but it was all the scouts of the Montreal Canadiens needed to see as they took him 8th overall in the 1973 amateur draft. Immediately jumping into the starting lineup he was a pivotal member of the Canadians teams that won 4 straight Stanley Cups from 1976-1979. Bob spent 15 NHL seasons with the Habs and just before retirement in 1989, added a 5th Stanley Cup in 1986. After retiring as a player, Gainey became Head Coach of the Minnesota North Stars and led the team to a Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1991. He was also named General Manager in 1992 and stayed on as head coach till 1996, 3 years after the relocation to Dallas. In 1999 as GM, Gainey captured a 6th Cup as the Stars hosted Lord Stanley’s mug. He served as GM of the Montreal Canadians from 2003 to 2010. Gainey also represented Canada in many international competitions including the Canada Cup in 1976 (winners) and 1981(runners up) and World Championships in 1982 and 86 (Both bronze medal wins)
