Attack Show Off Potent Powerplay, Defeat Petes 5-1
An injury-riddled Petes squad visited Owen Sound on Tuesday night to make up for the postponed game on January 7. The story of the night was a lack of productivity on the powerplay, as Peterborough was sorely missing their snipers, falling 5-1 to the Attack who went three for three on man advantages of their own.
After a nearly non-stop opening series featuring posts, crossbars, and electrifying body checks, Chris Bigras opened the scoring for Owen Sound with a powerplay marker fromHolden Cook and Daniel Milne. The Petes responded by putting the pressure on the 6’8” Jack Flinn, but the big man stood tall – in every sense of the word – to keep the Attack in the lead.
The Petes continued to press as the first intermission drew near, ultimately winning the first period shot battle 12-6, but after defending several chances the Attack mounted a rush in the dying seconds and Milne smoothly tucked the puck home with just 0.6 seconds to play from Cook and Erik Bradford.
Peterborough hopped on a four-minute powerplay to start P2 after Josh MacDonald took a slash, but the visitors managed just one shot on net. With a powerplay of their own,Petrus Palmu improved Owen Sound’s already strong PP% by tipping home a Bradford shot also assisted by Bigras.
The Petes would respond this time, though, finally getting an evasive powerplay goal as Kyle Jenkins found the back of the net from the point. Jenkins seventh on the season was assisted by Eric Cornel and Matt Spencer just 1:30 after Palmu’s marker.
The dedicated Tuesday night fans didn’t have to wait long for their team to regain their three-goal lead as Danil Sharipzyanov did his best Thomas Edison impression, lighting the lamp from Bradford and Palmu at 10:30.
Despite the teams swapping chances like gifts on Christmas morning as the second period progressed, Sharipzyanov’s marker was the final goal of the stanza, with Owen Sound finishing the frame with a 4-1 lead and 21-17 shot advantage.
Chapter three was as sloppy as its predecessors, but the wide-open game produced no goals until the final minutes of the game. At 17:04, Jaden Lindo put a nice tip past Mancina from Bigras and Santino Centorame.
Owen Sound held their four-goal lead through to the end of the game, picking up their thirtieth win of the season with a 6-1 win, also controlling the shot battle 34-24. Bradford, Milne, and Palmu were the first, second, and third stars of the game, respectively.
