Petes Fight Back From 3-0 Deficit, Ultimately Fall to Wolves in OT
The Petes wrapped up their northern road trip in Sudbury for a matinee matchup with the Wolves on Sunday afternoon. It would be the first time that both teams faced off against each other since the Wolves beat the Petes 5-1 in preseason. Michael Simpson was back in net for the Petes, after having the night off on Friday in the Soo.
The first period was definitely not how the Petes expected to start the game. It was evident that the boys were ready to get out of the north and head back to Peterborough from the drop of the puck. Just four minutes in, penalty trouble would haunt the Petes again as Kieron Walton would score on the power play to give Sudbury a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Landon McCallum (brother of Petes player Braydon) would score to extend the lead to 2-0. With Sudbury pressing and on the powerplay again, Alex Pharand scored to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead. The Petes had some chances late, but couldn’t beat Wolves goalie, Joe Ranger, and would head into the intermission down three.
The second period started off with some good fortune for the Petes, as Kocha Delic would take a five minute major penalty for slew footing. On the ensuing powerplay, Sahil Panwar would tip a Sam Mayer shot by Ranger for his first goal as a Pete. The Petes would take advantage of the major power play once more, as a minute and a half later J.R. Avon would score his third goal in two games to bring the Petes within one. The game would stay 3-2 heading into the third.
The third was quiet until the halfway mark when Sam Mayer would bury a rebound to make it 3-3. Jack Van Volsen would pick up his first OHL assist on the play. The game would stay tied after regulation and the Petes would head to overtime for the second time in two games. Three minutes into overtime, right after Tucker Robertson hit the post, Nathan Villeneuve would sneak one past Michael Simpson to give the Wolves the win.
Sam Mayer led the Petes with a goal and an assist. Michael Simpson made 28 saves in the loss.
