Petes Battle Hounds Hard, Fall in Third Shootout in Four Games
Fans got their first and only regular season taste of the Soo Greyhounds on Thursday evening, and what a taste it was! Big hits, big saves, and big performances by hometown kids all played a role in the game, which the Greyhounds took by a score of 5-4 after a five round shootout.
The refs’ whistles were dry in the opening minutes as the ‘Hounds showed no signs of bus legs early on, and with the Petes displaying their trademarked early hustle. Both teams would score before five minutes had elapsed, starting with Matyas Svoboda tipping in point shot, assisted by Cole Fraser and Jonathan Ang. 21 seconds later, Jack Kopacka scored from Connor Timmins and Tim Gettinger.
With the opening goals washing each other out, Jonathan Ang took a square corner dump-in from Matt Timms and blasted the ricochet over Joseph Raaymakers glove for his second of the season, and the Petes’ second of the game.
After Ang’s goal, the road scored two straight, with Calvin Martin basically pulling an Auston Matthews in just his second career game at the PMC. Martin, the Peterborough native, scored his first career goal on his minor hockey ice with five minutes left in the period, assisted by Liam Hawel, and the Peterborian traded places with Hawel on the go-ahead goal with 2:20 to play, which was also assisted by Theo Calvas.
The furious first finished with the Hounds up 3-2. The shots on goal were 16-13 for the Petes.
Where goals seemed quick and easy to come by in the first, Dylan Wells and Raaymakers slammed the door shut in the middle twenty, with each keeper making important saves throughout.
Nearing the end of the second period, Troy Henley and Zach Senyshyn traded off-setting minor penalties – the first infractions of the game – setting up a fun albeit goalless 4-on-4. The Petes drew their first powerplay of the game with the period coming to a close, setting up a brief man advantage to start the third.
The Petes couldn’t capitalize on the powerplay, and the rivals kept up the gritty play as the period moved along. It wasn’t until still more big saves, and a few monstrous hits, that the home squad broke the tie. Zach Gallant was the catalyst, finishing an excellent shift of back-checking with a brilliant feed to Logan DeNoble, who elevated the score to 4-3. Ang, Martin, Jenkins
The Petes did everything they could to defend the lead in the final minutes, but with the goalie pulled Boris Katchouk took
advantage of a bouncing puck in the blue paint and squared the game at 4-4 from Bobby MacIntyre and Mac Hollowell. At the end of regulation, shots were 47-41 for the Hounds.
The extra session was everything fans could ask for and more, but the goal light wasn’t ignited, setting up the Petes’ third shootout in four games. In the shootout, Steve Lorentz scored on the first shot, Gustav Bouramman scored on the third, and in the fifth round, Otto Makinen sealed the extra session with a backhand to give Sault Ste. Marie a 5-4 shootout victory.
The final shots on goal were 49-45 for the Hounds. Ang, Martin, and Jenkins were the first, second, and third stars, respectively, and Troy Henley was the Mark’s hardest working player of the game as voted by fans on the Petes Mobile App.
The Petes hit the road for two games this weekend, including Friday in Oshawa and Sunday afternoon in Owen Sounds, before playing Sarnia next Thursday night at 7:05pm.
