2024 OHL Priority Selection Week – Peterborough Petes Third Overall Picks
The 2024 OHL Priority Selection, presented by Real Canadian Superstore, kicks off Friday, April 12 with rounds 1-3, beginning at 7:00 p.m. After the results of the OHL Priority Selection Draft Lottery were finalized on March 27, it was announced that the Peterborough Petes will select third overall.
Since 1994, the Maroon and White have held the third overall pick five times:
- In 1994, the Petes selected Peterborough native Kevin Bulibruck, who would play three seasons for the Petes, winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 1996 and serving as team Captain in 1996-97. Bolibruck was twice drafted to the NHL, being selected in the fourth round by the Ottawa Senators in 1995, and in the seventh round by the Edmonton Oilers in 1997.
- In 2004, the Petes selected Jordan Staal third overall out of Thunder Bay. Staal would win the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Petes in 2006, before being selected second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Staal would go on to play 18 seasons (and counting) in the NHL, where he currently serves as the Captain of the Carolina Hurricanes.
- In 2012, Peterborough selected Eric Cornel third overall out of the Upper Canada Cyclones organization. Cornel played his entire four year career with the Petes, being selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He served as Captain of the Petes in 2015-16 and currently sits eighth all-time in games played with 265.
- In 2013, the Petes drafted defenceman Matt Spencer from the Oakville Rangers. Spencer would also spend his entire four year career with Peterborough, being selected in the second round by the Tampa Bay Lighting in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He wore an “A” for the Petes from 2015-17, appearing in 251 games total for the Maroon and White.
- Most recently, the Petes selected Will Cuylle with the third overall pick in 2018. Although he never signed with Peterborough, the Maroon and White were granted the fifth overall pick in 2019 as compensation. With that pick, they would select Anaheim Ducks star Mason McTavish.
