Pre-Game Warm-Up – Petes vs Firebirds – Oct. 5
The Flint Firebirds – the OHL’s newest team – make their first and only regular season visit to the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday, October 4.
Both the ‘Birds and Petes are playing well to start the season. Flint (3-0-0-0) is currently undefeated and are an honourable mention in the CHL Top 10 Rankings, squeaking out wins in a shootout and overtime, respectively, against the Owen Sound Attack and Ottawa 67’s. The Petes (2-2-0-0), meanwhile, are riding high after an 8-4 win against the Niagara IceDogs on Sunday afternoon. The Petes are 3-0-0-1 all-time against the Firebirds.
Perhaps the biggest story heading into the weekend, though, is coming out of Toronto (literally). Nikita Korostelev, who was just reassigned by the Toronto Marlies after attending Leafs and Marlies training camps, has decided to forego pro contract offers to play with the Petes for his overage season.
Korostelev, or “Koro” as he is affectionately known, was the Petes’ leading scorer in 2016-17. He has the skill and drive to make a big impact in the Electric City this year, and will also be a boost in the locker room, particularly with young country-mates Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, Gleb Babintsev, and point-per-game sniper Pavel Gogolev.

Fans at the game on Thursday should key on six players who have been named in the NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch list. For the Petes, Declan Chisholm, Der-Arguchintsev and Gogolev are listed, while Port Perry native Ty Dellandrea, as well as Hunter Holmes and Dennis Busby, made the grade for the Firebirds.
Speaking of the NHL draft, Florida Panters prospect Jonathan Ang was named the On the Run OHL Player of the Week, putting up seven points in three games, vaulting him to the lead among Petes scorers.
Tim Horton’s is sponsoring Thursday’s game, and will be giving away Tim Cards to several lucky fans in attendance. In the past, Tims has given out hundreds of dollars of cards, so whether you’re a fan of Original or Dark Roast, be sure to come to the game to win.
The game charity this week is the Kawartha Gymnastics Club. Funds raised at the game, including those at the ever-popular chuck-a-puck, will be directed to facility and equipment upgrades.
Thursday’s game is the first ever Service Club Night at the PMC! Clubs in attendance on Thursday will include the Peterborough Rotary Club, BEL Rotary Club, Kawartha Rotary Club, East Peterborough Lions Club, Lakefield Lions Club, Millbrook & District Lions Club, Fowlers Corners & District Lions Club, Kinsmen Club of Peterborough, Kiwanis Club of Peterborough, Scott’s Plains Kiwanis Club, and Kawartha Shrine Club.
