Otters Prospects at OHL Gold Cup – Recap
The OHL Gold Cup came to a close on Sunday and so did the seasons for six Erie Otters prospects, with one standing on top at the end of the tournament.
The championship game saw an all GTHL final, with the GTHL Red and Blue squads matched up for the gold medal. GTHL Blue erased two separate deficits to grab their first lead of the hockey game late in the third period, and hold on for the OHL Gold Cup Championship in a thrilling 5-4 final. Erie Otters goaltending prospect Forbes Andersen (8th round – 146th overall) helped GTHL Blue on their path to Gold Cup supremacy by picking up two victories over the four day event with a 2.38GAA and a .872 save percentage in his two appearances. Although GTHL Red came up a goal short, Erie Otters prospect Ryan Forberg (13th round – 246th overall) took home a silver medal. He suited up in all four games with GTHL Red and recorded two PIM.
The bronze medal game once again pitted Otters prospects against each other with ALLIANCE handling OMHA White by the score of 8-2. Defensive prospect Christian Kyrou (5th round – 84th overall) helped ALLIANCE secure third place at the tournament and will take home a bronze medal. Although their tournament came up just short with OMHA White, Otters prospects Brett Bressette (4th round – 65th overall) and Wil Murphy (5th round – 86th overall) each recorded an assist in the weekend of games.
Erie Otters top pick at the OHL Priority Selection Connor Lockhart (1st round – 3rd overall) helped his HEO squad to a 2-2 record on the weekend and powered the squad to a 4-3 victory in their final game Sunday against NOHA with his 3 point (1G – 2A) afternoon. The 15-year-old finished third on his team in scoring over the four day event.
