Otters Score Four In The Second, Top Frontenacs 6-3
Kingston, Ontario – The Erie Otters stayed perfect on their Eastern Ontario road trip by downing the Kingston Frontenacs 6-3 Friday night at the Leon’s Centre to sweep the regular season series.
Despite dictating pace of play in the first period, the Otters Offense was stymied by Frontenacs’ goaltender Ryan Dugas who stopped 12 Erie shots in the opening frame. Kingston’s Zayde Wisdom would give the Frontenacs a 1-0 lead into the break, scoring his 20th of the year just before time expired in the period when his shot slipped past Aidan Campbell with just 55 seconds left in the frame.
The Otters came out un-phased to start the second period and would quickly grab control of the game. Hayden Fowler and Cameron Morton would assist on Danial Singer’s game-tying goal at the 3:06 mark of the middle stanza. Fowler and Singer then assisted on the go-ahead goal by Emmett Sproule just 81 seconds later. Singer recorded his third point of the second period with Erie’s third straight goal, which was assisted by Chad Yetman and Drew Hunter at the 5:40 mark. Cameron Morton scored from Yetman and Daniel D’Amato at the 9:58 mark of the second period to end the Erie onslaught. Morton’s goal would eventually stand as the game-winner, and his second game-winning goal in as many nights. Shane Wright answered back for Kingston with 95 seconds remaining in the frame to make the score 4-2 heading into the second intermission.
Making things interesting, Nick King brought the Frontenacs to within one goal just three minutes and 41 seconds into the third period. Maxim Golod shut down the Kingston comeback effort with a goal assisted by Yetman at the 4:39 mark of the frame, making the score 5-3. Golod then punctuated the 6-3 Erie win with his second goal of the period, assisted by Jacob Golden and D’Amato at 11:56.
The victory moves Erie into a tie for sixth in the Western Conference with the Flint Firebirds at 40 points each in the standings. Otters forwards Brendan Hoffmann and Brendan Sellan both skated in their 100th OHL games Friday night.
Erie will be back in action on Sunday, January 5th, when they visit the Ottawa 67’s in an attempt to complete their road trip sweep.
