ERIE PICKS UP 50TH POINT IN OT LOSS
Erie, Pennsylvania – Winners of three-straight games, the Erie Otters would don green St. Patrick’s Day jerseys on Saturday night, hoping a little luck-of-the-Irish would close their homestand with a fourth-straight. After downing the Windsor Spitfires on Friday night by way of a 6-4 decision, the Otters would look for their fourth-straight victory over their Western Conference foes, as well.
If one thing would carry over for Erie from the previous game, it would be early-scoring. Noah Sedore (13) – the Sonic Hot Scorer – would send the fans home with free lunch, scoring the opening goal just :39 into the game; this would be Erie’s first – and only shot – for most of the first. A clean penalty box would be maintained from the previous game as well. Late in the first, Windsor would get the game knotted up from Wyatt Johnston (32). Despite an early goal, Erie would trail in shots 12-2 in a 1-1 game.
The second period would be a very similar one to the night before, as the frame would end – yet again – in a 3-3 stall. How would we get there? It would start in all-too-familiar fashion again, with Nathan Sauder (2) would net the game’s second goal, just 3:29 in. 3:27 after that, Carey Terrance (6) would give the Otters a 3-1 lead, but the Spitfires would fire back with a pair in the ensuing six minutes from Alex Christopoulos (9) and Daniil Sobolev (2) to make it 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Just 2:04 into the third, Brendan Sellan (18) looked to play hero, as Erie would retake the lead 4-3. With a late penalty against the Otters, Matthew Maggio (28) would net his third of the weekend to force overtime. Erie would pick up a crucial point to move to 50 on the season. In overtime, each team would have their opportunities, but Will Cuylle (31) would be the hero to win the game for the Windsor Spitfires.
Thus draws the end of the five-game homestand for the Erie Otters, as they prepare for five-straight on the road in their final long road-stretch of the 2021-22 season. The Otters would find a 3-1-1 record during their home stretch, with the new road trip starting on Monday night when the team travels to their Midwest Division foes, the Guelph Storm.
