Niagara IceDogs: The Story Behind the Numbers
Have you ever wondered how your favourite Niagara IceDogs’ players chose their jersey numbers?
We were curious about the same topic. It seems that most of the IceDogs chose their numbers in tribute to family members, favourite players, or based on their birthdays. Two skaters flipped old numbers. Only one held onto an assigned number. The stereotype of superstitious hockey players does not seem to apply to the IceDogs very well; only two picked lucky numbers.
Tucker Tynan — 1
It’s a mainstay number for goalies.
Landon Cato — 2
No.2 is a family number; my brother wore it playing basketball and my dad grew up wearing it playing sports.
Anthony Agostinelli — 3
I chose No.3 because of my birth year, 2003.
Isaac Enright — 4
I wear No.4 because it’s a defenseman’s number.
Jackson Doherty — 8
When Niagara traded for me, I was trying to get number ten, but Mason Howard had it, and my mom’s birthday is on July 8th, so I thought I would do something nice for her.
Ivan Lodnia — 9
Honestly, I don’t know the reason why I wear No.9, but it was just what I chose when I was a little kid, and it has stuck with me the rest of my life.
Mason Howard — 10
Growing up in London, my favourite player on the Knights, Josh Beaulieu, wore No.10.
Jonah De Simone — 11
In my first year of hockey, I trained the entire summer going from Timbits to go play Super 7. I was one of the last guys to get a spot on the team, so I didn’t have many choices for numbers, and my dad’s favourite number growing up was ten. I wanted number ten to make my dad proud, but the best player on the team had number ten, so they gave me a list of available numbers and 11 was one of them. I figured it’s one more than my dad’s favourite number so I went with it, and it’s stuck ever since.
Cameron Butler — 12
I wore No.21 in Peterborough, but Ethan Sims had that number when I got traded here, so I reversed it.
Cam Snow — 13
Growing up, my favourite player was Mats Sundin.
Giancarlo Chanton — 14
I chose to wear No.14 because when I was younger, I watched a lot of High School Musical, and my favourite character Troy Bolton wore fourteen.
Oliver Castleman — 15
I actually didn’t choose my jersey number, my first year in Niagara we only had numbers up to 30, and a lot of returning guys and signees had already picked their numbers. So I remember getting to the rink one day, I had worn No.10 in pre-season and Nick Hornby (IceDogs’ equipment manager), said I’ll be wearing no.15 like it or not. My birthday is September 15th so it turns out it has a little bit of meaning to it.
Cam Peters — 17
I’ve grown up wearing No. 17 my entire life because of Wendel Clark.
Ryan Campbell — 18
My mom’s birthday.
Ethan Sims — 21
I have memories of going to the rink and watching my brother play hockey when I was a kid and he wore 21 so I thought I’d pick it too.
AJ Cook — 27
My grandfather wore No.27 playing hockey and No. 72 playing football; the year he passed away, I changed my number to 27 in his honour.
Andrew Bruder — 28
My favourite player is Claude Giroux.
Andrew MacLean — 30
I’m not sure why I choose number 30. My first OHL team just gave this number to me; I didn’t have a choice to pick. I had a good season in Owen Sound and Oshawa was iffy, so 35 went on my bad list, so I went back to 30 and things are going good now.
Josh Rosenzweig — 34
I thought No.34 looked cool when I was younger and I’ve stuck with it.
Christian Sbaraglia — 37
I think it’s just one of those numbers that picked me; it’s just always been lucky to me.
Adrien Beraldo — 58
5+8=13, I was born on January 13th and thirteen backwards is my sister’s birthday.
Lucas Theriault — 61
All my life, I’ve worn No.16. I felt like it was cool to flip it around to make it 61.
Jake Uberti — 73
I was born on March 7th (03/07) so I swapped the numbers.
Dakota Betts — 77
I wore 71 in midget and last year when I played for the Whitby Fury (Jr.A) that number was taken, so I chose to wear No.77 and decided to keep it.
Elijah Roberts — 98
When I was younger, you could only pick numbers (1-to-30), so I wore No. 9 because that was my mom’s favourite number. When you could pick numbers outside of that, I wore No. 98 because I wanted to be the highest number on the team and you couldn’t pick 99.
