IceDogs Fall 3-1 to Greyhounds, Return to St. Catharines for Home Opener Thursday!
The Niagara IceDogs fell to the hometown Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds by a score of 3-1 on Saturday night to finish their season opening northern road trip 1-1.
The goaltenders would be the story in the first period with Brent Moran and Greyhounds starter Joseph Raaymakers would combine to stop all 16 shots in the period to keep things scoreless through one. Shots after one favoured the home side 10-6.
In the second, IceDogs captain Anthony DiFruscia would open the scoring on the powerplay, putting home his second of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 7:12 mark of the frame. Unfortunately for the IceDogs, Sault Ste. Marie would take advantage of a 5-on-3 powerplay and a five minute powerplay to score a pair of powerplay goals in a span of 55 seconds before the end of the period to put the IceDogs down 2-1 after 40 minutes. Shots after two were 21-17 Greyhounds.
The IceDogs would battle hard in the third looking for the equalizer and Moran would be solid keeping things within one, but it was not meant to be as Sault Ste Marie would add a 4-on-4 goal with just under five minutes remaining in to make it 3-1. That would prove to be it for scoring as the IceDogs fell by the same 3-1 score. Final shots in the game were 33-25 for Sault Ste. Marie.
The IceDogs will now return to St. Catharines where they will play host to the visiting Erie Otters in their 2015/16 Home Opener!
