Top Dogs of the Past: Featuring Stephen Dhillon
Former IceDogs’ netminder Stephen Dhillon was with the team for five seasons between 2014-2019. Dhillon won the Eastern Conference with the team in 2015/16 and made it to the conference semifinals two other times as the starting goaltender, and played an outstanding total of 198 games for the IceDogs.
What have you been currently pursuing and what are your plans for the future?
“I have been pursuing a math major at Queen’s University in Kingston, and I hope to have a career in the health science field.”
How did your time with the IceDogs help you transition to being a professional?
“The IceDogs speaking engagements, community service and road trips where we functioned as ambassadors for the team and our town helped me develop a professional demeanor which will be beneficial to any future career.”
Recall your favourite memory/moment from your IceDogs’ experience
“I have many great memories over the five years, but the one that stands out is the 2016 playoff run. The community support was phenomenal, and I always remember the fans cheering in the Meridian Center when we won the Eastern Conference.”
What experiences that you had with the IceDogs have you been able to draw upon so far in your professional career?
“The community service with the IceDogs has definitely been an important facet of my career, because it has allowed me to engage with the community, focus on others’ needs and develop a connection with people. These skills are not easy, and I am thankful the IceDogs provided many opportunities for community outreach so that I am at ease with it. Thank you IceDogs for showing me wonderful ways to connect with the community and make a difference.”
What was it like playing in Niagara regarding the fans and energy of the city/organization?
“I enjoyed creating a long-lasting connection with St. Catharines and its wonderful people over my five years on the IceDogs. The unbelievable warmth, acceptance and support of our fans when we as players were on and off the ice is something I will treasure. There is nothing better than playing a home game in front of a packed crowd of IceDogs fans at the Meridian Center! The atmosphere in the Meridian Center is the best in the league because of the energy and excitement of the fans!”
