IceDogs Close Out Northern Swing in Sudbury
The IceDogs close out the northern swing of their roadtrip this afternoon, as they take on the Wolves in Sudbury. In four meetings thus far, the ‘Dogs have pulled out a pair of 3-1 wins, as well as a 5-4 overtime thriller in early October. The 2:00pm puck drop will be the fifth of six meetings between these two teams, as the IceDogs look to add to their point total, and secure a position in the playoffs.
Featured in this afternoon’s game are two natives of the Niagara Region, IceDogs’ defenseman, Jonathon Schaefer, and Wolves’ Liam Dunda.
Schaefer, of Stoney Creek, has seen an expanded role in his second season with the IceDogs. He sees top pairing minutes, with captain Ryan Mantha, and has been tasked with the special teams responsibilities. In 50 games this season, Schaefer’s picked up 11 points, 1 goal and 10 assists, but it’s his defensive game that’s made him key to the team’s success this season. For the ‘Dogs to continue their strong play against the Wolves this afternoon, Schaefer will be a big part of it.
The Wolves have relied on Dunda’s leadership qualities this season to guide their younger players. The Grimsby, ON native is in his 4th season in the league, and it has been his veteran presence, and 17 points on the season that have made him invaluable to the IceDogs’ rivals in the north.
