GAME RECAP | IceDogs take the Sting out of Sarnia with 5th straight win
The IceDogs are leaving Sarnia with a 4-3 defeat over the Sting under their belt!
The first period ended in a scoreless draw, despite the IceDogs leading the Sting in shots 7-6. Between period, Akil Thomas mentioned that the first period against an opponent the ‘Dogs haven’t yet played this season is a difficult 20 minutes to feel out the other team. That certainly was true for the opening period of this game. Heading into the middle frame, Thomas mentioned the IceDogs needed to stick to their game plan and trust their plays.
Nearing the midway point in the second period, the IceDogs were awarded their first powerplay opportunity of the game as Ben Jones was cross checked in front of the Sarnia goaltender. Jack Studnicka scored his 5th powerplay goal as an IceDog, and 8th goal with the man advantage of the season, into the open net! Matt Brassard and Ben Jones picked up the assists on Studnicka’s 19th goal of the season! Sarnia evened the score on a powerplay of their own. Then, the Sting were credited with a shorthanded goal that was initially waved off, but only allowed after Sarnia persisted for review. However, the IceDogs got that goal right back with one second remaining in another powerplay! Ben Jones scored his 28th of the season with the IceDogs’ 2nd powerplay goal of the game! Jason Robertson was credited with the primary assist, and with the secondary assist, Akil Thomas extended his point-streak to 8 games. Then, just over a minute later, Kyen Sopa scored his 15th of the season, getting rewarded for doing the work along the boards! Bradey Johnson and Elijah Roberts were credited with the assists on Sopa’s goal.
The Sting evened the score at 3 early in the third period. Forty seconds after Sarnia evened the score, Phil Tomasino went streaking into the offensive zone on a partial break and scored to re-gain the 1-goal lead! Jack Studnicka picked up his 2nd point with an assist on Tomasino’s goal, and Oliver Castleman was given his first point of the night.
The IceDogs have now won 5 in a row heading into tomorrow’s game, as they travel to Windsor to play in the hometown of Jack Studnicka. Tomorrow’s game against former IceDog Colton Incze and the Spitfires will be a rare 1:00pm start on Hockey Day on YourTV!
The ‘Dogs come back to town on Thursday, January 31st! Their game on the last day of the month is against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
