IceDogs’ Penalty Troubles Lead to a 5-1 Loss to the Soo Greyhounds
The IceDogs returned to the Meridian Center tonight to take on the Soo Greyhounds. The ‘Dogs are coming off a one point evening in Owen Sound last night and were looking to have a solid game after a very late night return to Niagara. Comparatively, the Greyhounds had the week off, following a home game on Sunday. Sitting 6th in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 6-2-2-0 in the last ten games played, the ‘Dogs could move up to 5th with a two point night.
The Greyhounds began the scoring in tonight’s matchup with a powerplay marker. The all rookie line consisting of Anthony Agostinelli, Cameron Snow, and Ethan Sims responded with sustained pressure in the offensive end. The Greyhounds capitalized once again to extend their lead to 2-0 with 5:18 remaining in the first period. The IceDogs answered back with a hard hitting shift and a shot from the point, courtesy of Elijah Roberts. The ‘Dogs were needing some defensive expertise as they found themselves killing off a 5 on 3. As the 5 on 3 concluded, Ivan Lodnia made a remarkable pass up centre ice to spring Oliver Castleman as he was let out of the box. Castleman went down and made no mistakes as he brought the IceDogs within one to end the first.

The Greyhounds extended their lead to 3-1, 3:45 into the second frame. As the IceDogs looked to bounce back, Kyen Sopa and Phil Tomasino made big blocks in the defensive end. Rookie Ethan Sims also had a standout period, throwing his weight around against a large Soo team.
At the start of the third period, the IceDogs went to work killing off three consecutive penalties. The IceDogs penalty kill (75.2%) shut down the Soo powerplay (20.9%) for all three attempts. The Greyhounds collected two more goals before the end of the game. Rookie goaltender Tucker Tynan made 43 / 46 saves in tonight’s 5-1 loss to the Greyhounds.
Saturday’s game is the Teddy Bear Toss, featuring the players wearing their Ugly Christmas Jerseys! Remember to bring a teddy bear to toss on to the ice after the IceDogs first goal! We are also collecting non-perishable food items for Community Care at the game.
