Game Recap: Oshawa 2, Ottawa 4
The Oshawa Generals hosted the Ottawa 67’s in the final regular season game of the year, dropping a 4-2 decision to their East Division rivals.
1st Period
Liam Herbst would be tested early in the Ottawa net when Kenny Huether and Daniel Robertson traded scoring chances, but they could not beat the 67’s goaltender.
The Generals would continue to test Herbst, who was having trouble controlling his rebounds early, but Huether could not beat him to open the score.
Ottawa would take their turn controlling the play in the Generals zone and would get a couple of scoring chances from Artur Tyanulin, but the diminutive forward could not beat Justin Nichols.
The Generals would get the first man-advantage of the game when Jeremiah Addison checked Jack Studnicka from behind along the side-boards. Riley Stillman would make the 67’s winger pay when he wired a slap shot from the point that beat a screened Herbst. Huether and Eric Henderson would pick up the assists as they set up the Generals defender.
Just 2:34 later the Generals would extend their lead on a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play between Alexandre Renaud, Studnicka, and Domenic Commisso. Renaud found Studnicka with a pass out front, who then found Commisso heading to the net, and the Generals rookie scoring leader finished the play by beating Herbst on the blocker side.
Ottawa would create some more scoring opportunities in the final few minutes of the period, but they could not beat Nichols as the Generals would take the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
2nd Period
The Generals would get a glorious scoring chance early when Kyle MacLean picked up a Daniel Robertson clearing attempt and broke in alone on Herbst, but his backhand shot rang off the post after he beat the 67’s goaltender.
Stepan Falkovsky would go to work in the Generals zone, as the big defender controlled play down low before finding Adam Craievich in the slot, but Nichols shut the door.
Shortly after the 67,’s would get one back when David Pearce picked up a pass in the slot before beating Nichols on the blocker side with a nice backhand shot. Chase Campbell added the lone helper on the goal, Pearce’s second of the season.
Ottawa would tie the game when Nathan Todd found a loose puck after a deflection in front before firing it into the open cage. Falkovsky and Travis Barron picked up the assists on the tying goal.
The 67’s would get their first power play of the game when Stephen Templeton picked up a tripping penalty. Ottawa would take their first lead of the game when Hudson Wilson one-timed a point shot that seemed to fool Nichols. The goal was Wilson’s first career OHL goal. Ben Fanjoy and Connor Graham added assists on the power play marker.
Both teams traded chances in the final half of the period, but after the three unanswered goals by Ottawa, the Generals would trail 3-2 heading into the final frame.
3rd Period
The third period would start slowly until Tyanulin would extend the 67’s lead on a partial break just after the 15-minute mark. Stillman would break up play in front of Nichols, but the Generals goaltender would poke the loose puck off of Tyanulin and into the back of the net. The lone assist on the goal went to Barron.
Drake Rymsha would pick up a goaltender interference penalty when he bumped into Nichols after a shot attempt. The Generals would get a pair of great scoring chances early in the man advantage, but Herbst stood his ground in the 67’s net and shut the door. Herbst would come up with another huge glove save on a Huether one-timer from the slot. Ottawa would go down a man when Falkovsky cleared a puck over the glass, sending the Generals to a 5-on-3. The 67’s would kill off both penalties, denying the Generals on a few different occasions.
Some fireworks would ensure when Brock Welsh and Pearce dropped the gloves in a spirited tilt.
The Generals would pick up another power play late in the game when William Brown was penalized for slashing on Sullivan Sparkes. Ottawa would kill the penalty without much pressure from the Generals, and they would shut it down in the final minutes to come away with the 4-2 victory.
