Shorthanded Generals fall 5-1 to Wolves
Oshawa, Ont., – It was Oshawa’s final trip to Sudbury on Friday night, and the Gens left empty-handed.
In the opening frame, it took almost 10 minutes for either team to get their feet moving. Eventually, it was the Wolves breaking the ice and opening the game’s scoring. Landon McCallum with a nifty move through his own legs made his way through multiple Generals’ defencemen. Initially, he lost control of the puck but batted the puck out of midair off of Jacob Oster’s pads and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Just a minute later, Matthew Buckley took advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Wolves to score his 6th of the season, tying the game for Oshawa. A nice feed from Joseph Serpa left Buckley by himself with an empty cage to make the Wolves pay for their mistake.
In the remainder of the opening period, the Generals fell into some deep penalty trouble, taking four consecutive penalties, all of which they were able to kill off. The Wolves outshot the Generals 10-5 in the first 20 minutes.
The Generals began looking like a team tired from killing off so many penalties. The second period started with two more goals from the home side Wolves, extending their lead to 3-1. First, Kocha Delic batted home another goal, the second of that style for Sudbury in the game. Off the net faceoff, it was Matthew Mania scoring his first goal since January, beating Oster for his 8th of the season.
At the tail end of their fifth straight power play, the Wolves were finally able to convert, off the stick of Quentin Musty’s 19th of the year, pushing the Wolves’ lead to 4-1. The second period would end with Sudbury outshooting the Generals 24-16.
The scoring continued into the third period for Sudbury, when Matthew Mania scored his second of the game and Sudbury’s second power play goal of the game. Mania’s 9th of the season extended the Wolves’ lead to 5-1.
No more pucks would cross a goal line and the final score would end 5-1 in favour of the Wolves. Beating them on the scoreboard, Sudbury also outshot the Generals 30-20.
