Home Opener presented by OMS this Sunday
Oshawa, Ont., – The Oshawa Generals return to the Tribute Communities Centre for the first time in the 2024/25 season as they face off against the Ottawa 67’s on Sunday, September 29th.
It is a year in which the Gens look to get a little revenge after making a deep run to the OHL finals where the London Knights ultimately swept them.
Owen Griffin is back for his sophomore season and is looking to build off a strong playoff said “It was a great run and experience and I think we have an amazing group of guys this year to get it done.”
Sunday is the first home test in what the Oshawa Generals hope will be the next step after taking what many saw as an unexpected jump.
There was a big change behind the bench for Oshawa after last season’s OHL Coach of the Year, Derek Laxdal was hired by the Coachella Firebirds. Steve O’Rourke was named the 36th head coach in his place having been with the Gens since 2022. O’Rourke comes in with a strong knowledge of what it took last season and knows that this year will not be any easier, “I’m looking forward to seeing the growth of our players being another season older and been through the playoff grind. I can’t wait to get into the regular season to have the great Oshawa fans behind us for another season.”
It was a big off-season for the Generals’ players as well, with three players being drafted to the NHL including two in the first round.
Oshawa heard the name of playoff standout Beckett Sennecke called out third in the draft much to the surprise of the young winger, it was then Ben Danford who was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs 31st overall, and in the third round Luca Marrelli was picked by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Along with the three draft picks the Gens had five other players attend NHL camps including Calum Ritchie (Colorado Avalanche), Jacob Oster (Columbus Blue Jackets), Dylan Roobroeck (NY Rangers), Matthew Buckley (Ottawa Senators), and Zack Sandhu (Detroit Red Wings). Of the eight Generals that were out at camps Marrelli, Oster, Buckley, and Sandhu have all been returned while Ritchie, Danford, and Sennecke are all still at NHL camp and Roobroeck is at AHL camp.
Sundays Home Opener brought to you by OMS is more than just hockey, Gens fans can show up early to take in live music, a beer garden presented by Labatt, and can take their photo with the Bobby Orr Trophy.
The tailgate party kicks off at 3:30 and leads right into the gates opening, Two for the Show will be performing and fans will be able to watch their favourite Gens walk in and shop team merch.
