Gens win 4th in a row with blowout over Greyhounds
Oshawa, Ont., – After what looked like a season down the drain just two months in, has turned into a four-game winning streak and the Generals currently holding onto the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
This time, it was the Soo Greyhounds running into a hot Oshawa Generals offence with snapping their win streak on the mind.
Early in the game, Oshawa gave the close to 5,000 in attendance a reason to get out of their seats, scoring three goals in the opening 20 minutes. Cameron Butler, Beckett Sennecke and Stuart Rolofs each scored in the first period, which only saw a handful of whistles. Generals came out strong, outshooting the Greyhounds 9-7. Leaver stopped all seven.
In the second period, the scoring continued for Oshawa. Both Rolofs and Sennecke scored their second goals of the game, extending Oshawa’s lead to a dominating 5-0 score. Oshawa recorded 17 shots in the middle period alone, countered only by six from the visitors. After two periods Oshawa outshot the Greyhounds 26-13.
The Greyhounds were able to answer in the 3rd period when Jordon D’Intino gave the Soo some life. It was short-lived though, as Calum Ritchie finished off a nifty pass from Cameron Butler to make it 6-1 Oshawa. With his goal-scoring streak on the line, Brett Harrison quickly took a breakaway pass into the Soo zone to score his 16th of the season, in just 21 games. The goal extended his goal-scoring streak to five. Before the final buzzer, Sault Ste. Marie did add one more goal with Christopher Brown’s second of the season.
With the 7-2 win, Oshawa secured their fourth win in a row, putting some more breathing room between themselves, the Sudbury Wolves, and the 10th-place IceDogs.
Oshawa swept the three-star honours, with Stuart Rolofs pacing the group as 1st star. Sennecke and Butler were 2nd and 3rd stars respectively. Patrick Leaver stopped 21 shots en route to his 10th win of the season.
