Gens look to hand Ottawa 67’s first loss
Oshawa, Ont., After a weekend on the road in their last two outings, the Gens return home to take on the undefeated Ottawa 67’s. While the Gens should be thrilled with the start of their 2022-2023 season with a 3-1-0-1 start if there’s a happier team in the OHL, it has to be the undefeated 67’s. Their 4-0-0-0 start propels them to the top of the OHL standings, and 10th on the CHL Top-10 Rankings.
It was a 50/50 weekend for Oshawa last week, dominating the Niagara IceDogs en route to a 6-3 victory. Former IceDogs Cameron Butler and Dylan Roobroeck each had three points for the Gens. The next night, the Gens would suffer their regulation loss of the season to the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-3. Despite coming back from an early 2-0 hole, the Gens could never find a lead of their own and were put away with a late empty netter. Tonight the Gens will hope to rebound from that loss and avenge the 7-6 defeat at the hands of these very same Ottawa 67’s.
The last time these two teams met was two weeks ago to the day, when the 67’s spoiled the Generals home opener, leaving with a 7-6 shootout victory. The first period alone saw six goals between the two clubs, with Oshawa jumping out to a 2-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Ottawa battled back with three straight goals before both teams traded goals the rest of the way. Newly appointed alternate captain Thomas Stewart tied the game for Oshawa midway through the 3rd period on a rush of his own.
Neither team could find the back of the net in overtime sending the game to the shootout. Despite letting six get past him in regulation, 67’s netminder Max Donoso stopped all three shooters. Paired with a Vinzenz Rohrer connection and Ottawa would leave Oshawa with a 7-6 victory.
While the season is still young, both teams find themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Can the Generals hand Ottawa their first loss of the season?
