2023-2024 Training Camp: Day Two Recap
Oshawa, Ont., –Day two of training camp scrimmages got underway Tuesday morning where Team Andreychuk defeated Team Lindros 6-5.
After a 4-1 victory last night, Team Andreychuk came into the second day of training camp on a high. In the first period, 2023 5th round selection Shawn Costello opened the scoring for his side. Shortly after, returning defenceman Thomas Stewart scored two goals, eerily similar to one another, from the point. Both goals made it through Team Lindros’ goalie Hayden Sabourin, who played the entire first period.
Team Lindros got in on the goal-filled first period thanks to Dylan Roobroeck. After a point shot was stopped by Noah Bender, Roobroeck, the 5th round pick of the New York Rangers, cleaned up the rebound.
Despite trailing 3-1 after 20 minutes, Team Lindros did outshoot their opponents 12-9. Bender stopped 11/12 shots he saw for Team Andreychuk.
In the second period, goaltending continued to impress for both sides. Midway through the frame, Carter Bickle robbed Ty Petrou with his glove hand with what is likely to be the save of this year’s training camp.
Each team was able to beat the other just once in the middle frame. Ed Downey, the Gens third selection in the 2022 U18 Priority Selection scored his first of camp. Matthew Buckley scored one of his own to give Team Andreychuk a 4-2 lead.
After 40 minutes, Team Andreychuk lead 4-2 and outshot Team Lindros 28-23.
The third period opened with the third goaltending change of they scrimmage for both squads. Jacob Oster entered the net for Team Andreychuk while Isaac Gravelle would play the third for Team Lindros.
The final frame was almost all Team Lindros as they stormed back to tie the game 4-4. Team Lindros found a spare after Ethan Toms and Michael De Sousa dropped the gloves. The tilt seemed to push Team Lindros as this marked the start of their big offensive push.
Just over three minutes into the period Tyler Graham put one past Oster to get within one. Just five minutes later, Luca Marrelli scored from the point to even the score at 4-4. Shorrtly after, Gravelle denied a Connor Chartrand penalty shot to keep momentum on their side.
With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Graham would score his second of the morning to give Team Lindros their first lead of the day. The lead was shortlived however, as 2022 6th round pick Caeden Heins tied the game for Team Andreychuk with just 1:41 remaining.
Nobody could solve the goalies in overtime so the scrimmage needed to be decided in a shootout.
Team Andreychuk was flawless, seeing both Beckett Sennecke and Ty Petroud dangle around Gravelle for goals. Oster stood tall in his net denying both Graham and 2023 1st-round pick Owen Griffin.
Both teams will return to the ice for scrimmage #3 at 3:45 on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday features another two scrimmage day at 10a-12p and 3:45-5:45. Training camp scrimmages will conclude Thursday when the final scrimmage takes place from 10:45-12:45.
