Owen Sound Scores Late in Overtime, Colts Lose Third in a Row
The Barrie Colts returned to home ice on Thursday night to take on the Owen Sound Attack in what would be the fifth meeting between the two teams this season.
The first period displayed physical hockey between these two teams. Despite the shots being 10-5 in favour of Owen Sound, the game remained scoreless after one period of play.
The second period displayed plenty of offensive chances for both teams. Owen Sound would open the scoring nine seconds into the period as Zach Nastasiuk beat Colts goaltender, Mathias Niederberger, on a high wrist shot from the slot. Daniel Milne and Chris Bigras gathered the assists on the goal.
At 8:11, the Colts would get on the board as Mark Scheifele scored his team leading 31st goal of the season to tie the game up at one goal apiece. Zach Hall made a nice play from behind the net to set up Scheifele for the goal. Colts defenceman, Jonathan Laser picked up the other assist on the goal.
Moments later, Daniel Zweep scored to give Owen Sound a 2-1 lead as he buried a loose puck by Niederberger. Kurtis MacDermid and Brayden Rose got the assists on the play.
However, the Colts would strike back as Scheifele scored his second goal of the night to tie the game at 2-2. Colts forward, Steven Beyers made a nice pass from the corner to set up Scheifele in the slot and he made no mistake as he fired a hard wrist shot by Owen Sound goaltender, Jordan Binnington.
The third period had both teams trade several chances including 14 shots by Owen Sound. Colts goaltender, Niederberger would stop all 14 shots he faced and the game went into overtime.
In overtime, Kurtis Gabriel scored the game winner with just 37 seconds remaining as the puck deflected off his stick into the Colts goal after a scramble in front of the net. Niederberger made 38 saves in the loss. Owen Sound had the edge in shots, 41-27.
The Colts will return to action tomorrow night against the Sudbury Wolves. Game time is 7:35 at the Sudbury Community Arena.
