Colts Rock the Frontenacs With 8-3 Victory
The Barrie Colts would make a statement Saturday night against one of their toughest opponents in the Eastern Conference scoring eight times lifting them to a huge 8-3 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs.
Coming into the night the Fronts had taken all three matchups so far on the season, and after a convincing win the night prior in Niagara the Colts would complete the weekend pushing the win streak to four games.
Aaron Luchuk would push his point streak to 20 games potting a goal and three assists and Andrei Svechnikov would make it 17 straight with a point picking up two goals and an assist.
Zach Magwood added two more points on the night to reach 100 career OHL points.
With just seven games remaining in the regular season you knew this would be a barn burner. The first period would not disappoint as the Colts would come out of the gate flying.
Just under three minutes in, Ryan Suzuki hard on the fore-check would win a battle behind the Frontenacs goal leaving it for Lucas Chiodo to find Zach Magwood alone in front to one time his 22nd of the year past Brendan Bonello.
Nearing the midway point of the first the boys would keep the pressure coming.
It would be the top line striking often as they do. Luchuk skating the puck out of the corner would wrist a low shot on Bonnello. He’d make the pad save, but Svechnikov would follow it right up grabbing the rebound and burying it for his 33rd goal of the season putting the Colts up by two early.
With seven minutes to go in the opening frame, while on the powerplay the Frontenacs would respond with one of their own. Gabriel Vilardi would find Linus Nyman alone in the slot to wrist one past Leo Lazarev to reduce the lead to one.
Barrie’s trouble in the penalty department would continue. With just over three minutes remaining in the period the Frontenacs would even things up on the man advantage. Brett Neumann would snap a shot from the top of the circle squeaking it through the five hole of Lazarev to make it 2-2 heading to the second.
Early the in the second the Frontenacs would get called and it would be Barrie’s turn on the man advantage to strike right back.
Luchuk would find Chiodo all alone back door at the side of net to tap home his 26th of the season to put Barrie back on top. Svechnikov also adding an assist on the powerplay marker.
It wouldn’t be long for the OHL’s leading goal scorer to add to his total. At 11:45, T.J. Fergus would send a high shot towards Bonnello, he’d make the initial save, but Luchuk would be right there to bang home the rebound for his 45th of the year increasing the lead to 4-2.
The Fronts once again would come back quickly. Just 50 seconds later Cliff Pu would find Vilardi in front to cut the lead back to one.
The quick goal wouldn’t deter the Colts relentless attack and at 16:45 the boys would respond again.
Tyler Tucker would steal the puck as Kingston attempted to leave their zone sending it low to the corner. Who else but Luchuk would pick up the puck and feed Svechnikov in front firing his 34th to the back of the net to restore Barrie’s two goal lead.
Just 37 seconds into the third Aidan Brown would join in on the offense snapping a bullet past Bonnello to increase the lead to three, his 6th on the campaign with assists to Jaden Peca and Justin Murray.
With just over four minutes remaining in the game Peca and Brown would connect again with Brown snapping home his 2nd of the game to make it 7-3.
Next up the boys will head to Hamilton to take on the Eastern Conference leading Bulldogs Wednesday, March 7th before returning home Thursday March 8th to take on the Owen Sound Attack.
