Svechnikov Nets First Career Hat-Trick in 3-1 Victory
Andrei Svechnikov recorded his first career OHL Hat-trick in Barrie’s 3-1 victory over North Bay.
It was the first time the Barrie Colts welcomed in the North Bay Battalion for the first time this season. The two squared off earlier in the season in North Bay with the Battalion coming out with a 5-2 victory, the Colts wanted to return the favour on this night.
It didn’t take Barrie very long to get the crowd on their feet this night. Alexey Lipanov fed the puck up along the right wing for Andrei Svechnikov, and he did the rest. Flying up the wing and past the North Bay defenseman before jamming it past Julian Sime to open the scoring.
The first overall pick in the 2017 CHL Import Draft wasn’t done there. He would light the lamp just past the eight-minute mark of the period to extend the Barrie lead. It was a great shot, but definitely one Sime would want back as Svechnikov snapped it through the arm of the North Bay goaltender for his 5th of the season. Chris Cameron and Ryan Suzuki picked up the helpers.
Just like Barrie did in the first, North Bay would add a quick one in the second. After a scramble in front looked the like puck made its way into the net, a scramble would ensue before Brady Lyle would find the loose puck in the slot and backhand it past a sprawling Leo Lazarev who stood no chance of making the save.
The rest of the period would go scoreless, but not without many opportunities and both teams had multiple powerplays but couldn’t find a way to put it home.
Lazarev continued to play strong for Barrie coming up with some big saves to keep his team in the lead. At the other end, Sime had the start but it was Matthew Woroniuk coming into releave Sime after the second goal and played a strong second period to keep the score the same.
The third period would bring some physicality, both teams had no fear in laying the body with big hits on both sides of the ice. It did get the Battalion in trouble though as it sent them to the penalty box.
Barrie’s powerplay struggles would continue though as they couldn’t get anything going.
Late in the period still down one the troops would get a glorious opportunity as Justin Murray of Barrie would take a five minute checking to the head penalty that would see him ejected from the game.
North Bay wasn’t able to muster anything up, but instead it was Andrei Svechnikov that put the dagger in the hearts of the troops as he sealed it with the hat-trick goal solidifying the Colts 3-1 victory.
