THE 2000 MASTERCARD MEMORIAL CUP
Posted: Tuesday, June 27, 2000, 10:15 p.m.
Hello Canada and hockey fans coast to coast. This is 2000 MasterCard Memorial Cup coming to you from the hockey town of Halifax. This was my opening for my most priceless CHL audition address at the recent Memorial Cup 2000 in Halifax.
Upon arrival in Halifax, the seven most priceless CHL fans were invited to a welcome reception at the World Trade Centre with special guest Bobby Orr for a picture and autograph session. This was very special for me as he autographed my hockey stick one more time. He had done so in 1980 and by doing it again in 2000 that made it a two-century stick. You could call it a priceless hockey stick.
Then we moved to the Halifax Mooseheads and the Quebec League Champs, the Rimouski Oceanic.
Friday May 26th was TV day. We were on TV. Cameras outside filming at 8:00 a.m. for ATV and CTV. At 10:00 a.m. we moved to the CBC studios for more outside filming. At 1:00 p.m. our individual auditions were held in a huge tent at the Halifax pier with about a thousand hockey fans in attendance. Bobby Orr and his panel of judges presided over the auditions, while ATV, CTV, CBC, Global and TSN cameras recorded the action. Fred Best of Rosehill N.B. came up roses and was judged the CHL Most Priceless Fan, 2000. He will be featured in a MasterCard commercial sometime in 2001. There was no hockey on the 26th.
On May 27th, the semi-final game between the Barrie Colts and the Halifax Mooseheads was won by Barrie 6-3 and was carried coast-to-coast by the CTV network.
May 28th, in the final game for the MasterCard Memorial Cup 2000, the Rimouski Oceanic outclassed the Barrie Colts and won it with speed and finesse by a 6-2 score.
All Memorial Cup games at the 10,000 seat Halifax Metro Centre were completely sold out which is a tribute to the popularity of hockey in Halifax.
The 2001 MasterCard Memorial Cup will be held in Regina, Saskatchewan.
