Consistency key for Wolski
BRAMPTON, Ont. Wojtek Wolski has earned at least one point in 14 of his last 15 games, but the veteran Battalion left winger is looking for even more consistency in his play.rrSometimes I think it’s almost there, but I need to be consistent every night, said Wolski, who will bring a nine-game points streak into the Troops’ Ontario Hockey League game with the visiting Saginaw Spirit on Thursday night. If that happens, the team will do better.rrWolski is tied for the club lead in points with rookie right winger Luch Aquino, having amassed seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points. But he said he can see areas that he needs to continue to improve.rrI need to create offensive opportunities for myself and my teammates, and I think I need to capitalize on the chances I get for myself, said Wolski, who scored the winning goal in a 4-3 overtime victory at Saginaw on Oct. 9. rrI need to shoot a little more, because sometimes I pass too much and that takes away from my scoring opportunities.rrThe 18-year-old Mississauga resident, chosen by the Colorado Avalanche with the 21st overall pick in the National Hockey League’s Entry Draft last June, said he has noticed added attention from opponents this season.rrIt’s good that we have other players who can help spread out the offence, but I notice a little more attention. When I go out I see certain players from the other team go out too. It’s a little tougher, but I have to get used to it to play at the next level.rrColorado canceled its fall rookie camp because of the NHL lockout, but Wolski said he has received plenty of visits from the team’s scouting staff as well as Michel Goulet, vice-president of player personnel.rrThey have come to a lot of our games, particularly since they have a lot more free time because of the lockout. They’re trying to give me tips on playing better and with more consistency. It’s good that they’re supportive of me.rrI had a rough start to the season and I had a few discussions with Michel, and he told me I needed to carry the puck more and work harder and compete harder every night. The last time I spoke with them they wanted me to take on a more physical role and be a more physical presence every shift. That’s something I’m going to be looking to do.rrWolski has found a new role this season, working the point on the power-play unit.rrI’m playing a lot and I really like it. I think it’s been a big benefit to play on the point on the power play. I get the puck a lot more, and I want to be the guy making the plays.rrIn his rookie season with the Battalion in 2002-03, Wolski spent a lot of time watching overage defenceman Kevin Young run the power play.rrI liked watching Kevin back there. He was a very skilled player who was really patient. He never panicked, and that’s what I try to do back there.rrLater this month Wolski will be on the 22-man OHL squad in two games of the Canadian Hockey League’s Canada-Russia Challenge. Wolski played in last year’s inaugural event. The games form part of the identification process for the final selection camp for Canada’s national junior team that will play in the 2005 World Junior Championship.rrIt’s going to be tough to make that team, said Wolski, who attended the Canadian squad’s summer development camp. rrThere are a lot of great players in our league and across Canada, and I’m just going to try to make an impression at those games and hopefully get invited to the selection camp. r
