Battalion to open 2002-03 schedule at home Sept. 20

BRAMPTON, Ont. – The Battalion today released its 2002-03 regular-season schedule, which features 34 home dates including 21 Sunday afternoon games, eight Friday night dates, three Thursday nights and single games on Thanksgiving Monday and New Year’s Eve.

Start times for Battalion home games are 2 p.m. for Sundays and Thanksgiving Monday, 7:30 p.m. for Friday contests, 7 p.m. for Thursdays and 3 p.m. for New Year’s Eve.

The Battalion will play six exhibition games before opening its fifth season in the OHL with a home date against the London Knights on Friday, Sept. 20.

The Battalion will embark on its first campaign in the Eastern Conference as a result of divisional restructuring after the North Bay Centennials moved to Saginaw, Mich. The Troops join the Central Division with the Barrie Colts, Mississauga IceDogs, Sudbury Wolves and Toronto St. Michael’s Majors.

The unbalanced 68-game schedule features the Battalion meeting the IceDogs and Wolves eight times each, with six games to be played against each of Barrie and Toronto.

Brampton plays four times against each of its five East Division opponents, comprising the Belleville Bulls, Kingston Frontenacs, Oshawa Generals, Ottawa 67’s and Peterborough Petes.

The rest of the schedule consists of two games against each of the 10 teams in the Western Conference, which comprises the Erie Otters, Guelph Storm, Kitchener Rangers, London, Owen Sound Attack, Plymouth Whalers, Saginaw Spirit, Sarnia Sting, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Windsor Spitfires.

Sudbury provides the opposition on Thanksgiving Day after four seasons in which Toronto invaded the Brampton Centre on the holiday Monday. Mississauga plays at Brampton for the fifth consecutive New Year´s Eve.

SCHEDULE NOTES: The Battalion will play five of its first seven regular-season games on home ice…The longest homestand of the season is a three-game stretch starting Sunday, Oct. 27, against Mississauga…The Troops will make a three-game road swing to Windsor, Saginaw and Plymouth starting Thursday, Oct. 10…The Battalion will play three games in three days on five occasions…The team will play 25 of its last 27 games against Eastern Conference opponents and eight of its final 10 contests against divisional rivals…The Battalion will end its regular-season schedule on Sunday, March 16, when it hosts Belleville.
