Warren selected for U17s
NORTH BAY, Ont. — Cam Warren of the North Bay Battalion is one of 15 rostered Ontario Hockey League players named to Canadian entries in the U17 World Challenge, Hockey Canada announced Wednesday.
Centre Warren will play for Canada Red, one of two Canadian squads in the six-team tournament scheduled Nov. 2-8 at Truro, N.S. Rounding out the field are Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the U.S.
Warren, a Vaughan, Ont., resident, was North Bay’s first-round choice, sixth overall, in the OHL Priority Selection in April from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16s. He leads the Battalion in scoring with one goal and six assists for seven points in nine games.
“Cam is a special player who will be a strong addition for Canada Red,” said Adam Dennis, Battalion director of hockey operations.
“He’s made an immediate impact as a 16-year-old with our club, and we know he’ll do the same representing Canada. We look forward to watching him compete in Truro.”
The Canadian rosters were chosen by head scout Byron Bonora of Brooks, Alta., general manager Alan Millar of Tottenham, Ont., from the Program of Excellence and Mike Johnston of Dartmouth, N.S., and the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks, who’s the under-17 lead with the POE management group.
A total of 44 players from across the Canadian Hockey League, made up of the OHL, WHL and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, were included.
The tournament opens Nov. 2 with the teams split into two groups of three. All will play two preliminary-round games before the medal round, which ends Nov. 8 with the medal games. The event also will feature pre-tournament games at the Nova Scotia centres of Truro, Amherst and Wolfville on Oct. 31.
TSN and RDS are to telecast the medal games.
