Gerrior plays hero in 67’s win over Petes
In thrilling last-second fashion, the Ottawa 67’s stunned the Peterborough Petes on Sunday afternoon, claiming a 5-4 victory in the sixth game of their nine-game road trip.
In the third period a night ago, the Barber Poles and Brampton Steelheads combined for six goals, and to open the game on Sunday, the offence continued to roll both ways. Cooper Foster kicked off the affair under three minutes in, holding on just long enough to get around Zach Bowen, and slide the puck into the yawning cage.
Before you could blink, though, the Petes had a pair of markers of their own, courtesy of Caden Taylor and Francis Parish, giving the home side an early advantage. That was short-lived too, however, as Chris Barlas finished off a strong passing play in the offensive zone to tie the game.
It took nearly six whole minutes for the next goal, which came on the power play. Henry Mews blasted a shot from the top of the circle, beating the goaltender. On the play, Barlas notched up his third point of the afternoon, picking up the secondary assist.
Taylor levelled the score late in the frame, sending the clubs to the locker rooms deadlocked at three.
The offence dwindled away in the second stanza, and the Petes scored the lone goal of the frame, courtesy of Adam Levac on a shot that beat Collin MacKenzie under the blocker.
With the clock beginning to become an enemy for the 67’s, they cashed in on another power play opportunity. Cooper Foster fed the puck across the rink, where a waiting Will Gerrior made no mistake, scoring his eighth goal in his past seven games.
Overtime loomed – and begun to look like a certainty rather than a possibility – but the Barber Poles had other plans. With 11 seconds left to play, Gerrior pulled back a faceoff win and moved to the front of the net, where he banged home a loose puck, bagging two points in the process, giving Ottawa the 5-4 win.
