Ultramar Player of the Week: Alexis Lafrenière (Feb. 11, 2019)

For the second time in the past four weeks, Rimouski Oceanic winger Alexis Lafrenière has earned Ultramar Player of the Week honors. In a pair of games, the 17-year-old from St-Eustache, Quebec scored five goals and added three assists as the red-hot Oceanic extended their winning streak to 11 games.

On Wednesday night at home, the Oceanic saw its winning streak put in jeopardy. Trailing Chicoutimi 3-1 after 20 minutes, Lafrenière took matters in his own hands, posting a natural hat trick to go with an assist in Rimouski’s 5-4 triumph over the Saguenéens. For Lafrenière, who was named the game’s first star, it was his second three-goal game of the season.

On Friday night, Lafrenière and his Oceanic teammates took matters outside as they faced the Shawinigan Cataractes in the first game of the 2019 QMJHL Winter Classic in Saint-Tite, Quebec. The second year forward would open the scoring 13 minutes into the first period – which would prove to be his eighth game-winner of the season, tying him for the league lead – before adding another goal and two assists in his club’s 4-0 victory over the Cataractes. All told, Lafrenière would be involved in eight of the nine goals scored by the Oceanic on the week.

Currently riding an 11-game point streak, Lafrenière has moved into second place in the QMJHL scoring race with 87 points in 47 games. Named the league’s Forward of the Month for January, Lafrenière remains a top prospect for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
