Ultramar Player of the Week: Alexis Gravel (April 29, 2019)
The latest Ultramar Player of the Week is Halifax Mooseheads goaltender Alexis Gravel. In four games, the Asbestos, Quebec native went 3-1 with a 2.23 GAA and .938% save percentage as the Mooseheads punched their ticket to the President Cup Final for the first time in six years.
On Tuesday night in Halifax, Gravel made 34 saves, including 15 in the third period alone, as the Mooseheads took a 2-1 series lead over the Drummondville Voltigeurs with a 2-1 victory in Game 3 of their best-of-seven Semi-Final series. That performance earned Gravel first star honors for the contest.
The following night, the third-year veteran stopped 33 of 35 shots, this time turning aside 15 drives during the second period, and the Mooseheads took a 3-1 series lead thanks to a 5-2 home ice win over the Voltigeurs. Once again, Gravel was chosen as the game’s first star.
Following a 6-2 loss to the Voltigeurs in Drummondville on Friday night, a game in which Gravel made 36 saves, the two teams made their way back to Scotiabank Center on Sunday afternoon. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect was sensational in stopping 33 shots while Xavier Parent would deliver the series-winning tally 2:22 into overtime as the Mooseheads secured yet another 2-1 victory. For the third time on the week, Gravel was named the game’s first star as he and his teammates vaulted the Mooseheads into the President Cup Final for the first time since 2013.
Gravel has steadily improved as the postseason has progressed. Entering the championship round versus the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, his 2.52 GAA ranks fifth among all netminders while his .921% save percentage is good for third in these playoffs. His 18 career postseason victories place him second in Mooseheads franchise history behind only Zach Fucale in that department.
