Brandon Gormley selected with 6th overall pick
LOS ANGELES, Friday, June 25, 2010 Moncton Wildcats defenseman Brandon Gormley became the first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League player selected at this year’s NHL Entry Draft as the New York Islanders used their first selection (6th overall) to scoop up the talented blue-liner.
Gormley, who collected nine goals and thirty-four helpers for the Wildcats last season, spearheaded a solid defensive squad which helped Moncton earn a second President Cup title in franchise history. The P.E.I. native also was named to the League’s Second All-Star Team and earned the Michael-Bossy Trophy as the Top Professional Prospect.
Kirill Kabanov (Moncton) and Stanislav Galiev (Saint John) were also selected in the first round.
Unsurprisingly, the Edmonton Oilers used the first pick of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to select two-time MasterCard Memorial Cup MVP Taylor Hall. Then, the Boston Bruins took Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers. The Florida Panthers used the third overall pick to select ______.
Once again this year, the Canadian Hockey League leads the way in terms of top selections. 20 of this year’s first round picks are products of the Canadian Hockey League (WHL, OHL & QMJHL).
