Ultramar Player of the Week: Ivan Kosorenkov
Boucherville, Que. – The Ultramar Player of the Week is forward Ivan Kosorenkov (Tigres | Victoriaville) who dominated the QMJHL by finding the back of the net five times and adding four helpers in the three games he played.
The Russian’s success over the past week helped the Tigres win all three of their games. Kosorenkov also contributed to his linemate James Phelan’s successes after seeing the latter match his nine-point production over the past three outings.
Kosorenkov got things rolling when he picked up a goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Remparts last Thursday. On the next day, he was named the first star of a 6-1 win against Rimouski in which he had four points, including two goals.
The 19-year-old concluded his week by collecting another three points in a 5-2 win over Chicoutimi that included two goals he scored in a 47-second span in the second period alone.
Over last week’s three games, Kosorenkov scored five times on the five shots he fired on net and also picked up his 101st point in his 101st QMJHL game. He also extended his streak with at least one point to nine consecutive games.
Other players considered as the Ultramar Player of the Week were goaltender Mathieu Bellemare (Cataractes | Shawinigan) and forward Jeremy McKenna (Wildcats | Moncton).
Recently acquired by the Cataractes, Bellemare allowed only one goal on the 72 shots he faced over two games. He ended his week with a .986% save percentage and a 0.51 goal against average. Last Thursday versus the Océanic, Bellemare earned his third shutout of the season, tying him with four other QMJHL netminders for first place of that stat category.
As for McKenna, he has three games of two points or more, giving him a total of seven points and a superb +8 differential. Its on Sunday that McKenna made the most damage though, leading his team with two goals and one assist, earning the game’s first star honors and firing seven of his team’s 39 shots on goal in a 5-1 win over the Sea Dogs.
