Mooseheads’ Alexis Gravel named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Alexis Gravel of the Halifax Mooseheads is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the sixth week of playoff action ending April 28 with a 3-1 record, a goals-against average of 2.23, and save percentage of .938.
Gravel claims the honour for the second time this year after turning aside 136 shots over four QMJHL playoff contests to guide his squad to a six-game ousting of the Drummondville Voltigeurs and advance to the President’s Cup versus the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. The Chicago Blackhawks draft pick began the week Tuesday as he stopped 34 shots to come away with a 2-1 overtime victory in Game 3 that earned him first-star recognition. Gravel then made 33 saves the next night to push the Mooseheads’ series advantage to 3-1 thanks to a 5-2 final in which he was once again named the first star. His busiest night in the series came in Game 5 when he put up a 36-save performance but came out on the losing side of a 6-2 decision. However, Gravel and the Mooseheads then closed out the series in Game 6 after he once again made 33 stops en route to a 2-1 overtime victory that earned him his third first-star honour of the week.
The 19-year-old native of Asbestos, Que., is in his third season with the Mooseheads. Through 49 appearances in 2018-19, Gravel posted a 33-13-1-2 record with a 2.49 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. In 17 postseason contests, he’s come away with a goals-against average of 2.52 and save rate of .921.
Also considered for the award this week was Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick and Prince Albert Raiders netminder Ian Scott, who went 3-1 in four appearances, including one shutout, a goals-against average of 2.00, and a save percentage of .935 to help eliminate the Edmonton Oil Kings in six games. In the OHL, Guelph Storm goaltender Anthony Popovich helped his club come back in seven games versus the Saginaw Spirit thanks to a 3-1 record through four games, counting one shutout, a 1.77 goals-against average, and a .920 save percentage.
