Marcel-Robert Trophy: the QMJHL announces the 18 candidates
The QMJHL is proud to announce each team’s nominees for the 2023-2024 Marcel Robert Trophy, awarded to the Student Player of the Year. The winner will be announced on April 24th.
Each player selected by his team receives a $500 scholarship. Among these players, the three finalists will receive an additional $600 scholarship, while the Student Player of the Year will win a $1,500 scholarship, in addition to the Marcel-Robert Trophy.
Again, this year, we had some excellent applications, which made the choice of the three finalists even more difficult. We should be extremely proud of our student-athletes, who surpass themselves every year to reconcile their studies brilliantly with the practice of an elite sport. These young people demonstrate a strong sense of organization, discipline, effort, and perseverance. They can also count on the support of academic advisors, professors, and our school partners to give them the tools they need to succeed.
A selection committee has been set up to interview the three finalists for the Marcel-Robert Trophy and determine the winner of the prestigious award.
The selection committee members are
- Sébastien Fyfe, General Manager of Alliance Sport-Études and Fondation Sport-Études, Chairman of the Marcel-Robert Trophy Selection Committee
- Sophie Brassard, Career counsellor and head of student-athlete services, Fondation Aléo
- Pierre-Marc Guilbault, Former Marcel-Robert Trophy winner with the Shawinigan Cataractes in 2005-2006 and Director of Training Services at Delligatti Associates
- Martin Lavallée, Assistant to the QMJHL Commissioner
- Valérie Monette, QMJHL Education Program Director
Since 1981, the Marcel-Robert Trophy has been awarded annually to the player with the best combination of academic and athletic achievements. This nomination is one of the most prestigious in the QMJHL, since the player is chosen not only for his hockey talents and academic results, but also for his overall personality.
The trophy is named after Marcel Robert, former president of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 1977 to 1981, who was inducted into the QMJHL Hall of Fame on March 17, 1998. Mr. Robert was also a member of the league’s Board of Governors, representing Beauport (1990 to 1997), Cape Breton (1997 to 1998) and Acadie-Bathurst (2003 to 2004).
Throughout his involvement in amateur hockey, Marcel Robert has initiated and contributed significantly to the implementation of measures enabling young hockey players to practice their sport at an elite level while pursuing their studies.
