Inside the Numbers ahead of weekend #13
On Sunday, for the first time in 14 years, the rivalry between the Ottawa 67’s and the Gatineau Olympiques will be renewed as part of a regular season game. To top it all off, this game being played outdoors could also shatter an attendance record for an inter-league game played between the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Olympiques will enter Sunday’s tilt as one of the hottest teams in the QMJHL after failing to lose a single regulation game dating back to November 19.
OHL VS. QMJHL, INTER-LEAGUE GAMES
67’s vs. Olympiques – Ottawa against Hull/Gatineau, what a natural rivalry! For four consecutive seasons, from 1999-00 to 2002-03, both these teams faced off twice per season and gathered much attention. Here are a few highlights from those matchups:
- (2W-4L-1OTL-1D) – This is the record maintained by the Olympiques during the first eight matchups that happened in the early 2000’s. The only two Gatineau wins came in front of its home crowd, at the Robert-Guertin Centre. On the road, they managed to get only a single point, following an overtime loss back in 2000-01.
- December 15, 2002 – Nearly 15 years to the day have gone by since the last regular season game between the 67’s and Olympiques was played. The Quebec-based franchise has won that meeting by a score of 6-3.
- 10 500 fans – That is the attendance record for a game between the Outaouais River rivals. The record was set on January 23, 2000, in the first official game between both franchises. On average, their games have been played in front of 8117 fans, with a total of 64932 people having witnessed the eight games played between both teams to this day.
- (12W-13L-2OTL-1D) – Of the 28 inter-league games played between the OHL and the QMJHL, Q teams have only won 12 times. The Shawinigan Catarctes, undefeated in four games versus the Oshawa Generals, and the Victoriaville Tigres (3-3-0-0 vs. Belleville) have practically saved the Quebec-based franchises reputation by themselves.

THE TEAMS IN 2017-18
- Gatineau Olympiques – With eight wins in their last ten games, the Olympiques have shown great consistency. They have allowed two or less goals to their opponents in six of their last seven games and are currently enjoying a six-game win streak. Head Coach Éric Landry’s squad currently sits in 8th place in the standings with a record of 18-10-2-2
- Ottawa 67’s – At the time of writing these lines, André Tourigny’s team had only won twice in its last ten games and has an overall record of 14-15-1-2. Tourigny’s assistant coach is, just like him, a product of the QMJHL. He is Mario Duhamel, the former coach of the Olympiques in 2016-17. QMJHL fans may also recognize 20-year-old goaltender Olivier Tremblay (9-6-1-1 | 3.38 | .882) who also used to play in the QMJHL. He guarded the net for 117 games in the QMJHL, spread between Rimouski, Victoriaville and Rouyn-Noranda from 2013 to 2017.
