Eagles fall to Drakkar in shootout

A three point night by Screaming Eagles captain Jonathan Brunelle was not enough as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar edged the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday night at Centre 200.
Lukas Cingel, former Screaming Eagle David Rose and Carl Gélinas found the back of the net for the Drakkar in regulation while Jonathan Lessard scored the shootout winner for Baie-Comeau who improve to 24-18-1-3 on the season. William Carrier, Jonathan Brunelle and Kyle Farrell scored single markers for the Screaming Eagles who fall to 18-27-0-2 on the season.
Cape Breton with the loss is now on a two game losing streak which started on Sunday against the Moncton Wildcats while Baie-Comeau with the win is currently on a three game winning streak which started on Friday against the P.E.I. Rocket.
The Drakkar opened the scoring in the game as Slovakian Lukas Cingel scored his 15th goal of the season at the 5:35 mark of the first period, Julien Lepage and Jean-François Leblanc were given the assists.
Cape Breton would answer back as William Carrier split the Drakkar defensemen and beat rookie goaltender Philippe Cadorette on the blocker side for his 18th goal of the season at 7:23 of the opening period to tie the game at one, Kyle Farrell and Jonathan Brunelle picked up the helpers.
Former Screaming Eagle David Rose gave the Drakkar a 2-1 lead as his wrist shot deflected off defenseman Sébastien Payette’s stick and found the back of the net, the goal was Rose’s 13th goal of the season on the powerplay at the 11:00 mark of the first period, Sacha Guimond and Tomas Filippi recorded the assists.
The Screaming Eagles would tie the game up at two as Jonathan Brunelle fired a rocket from the point beating Drakkar netminder Cadorette for his 16th goal of the season on the powerplay just 47 seconds into the second period, Sébastien Payette and Michael Clarke added the helpers.
Carl Gélinas put the visiting Drakkar up 3-2 as he deflected in a beautiful pass by Frédéric Gamelin that beat Trudeau for his 21st goal of the season at the 1:58 mark of the third period, Gamelin along with Jonathan Lessard were given credit for the assists.
Again the Screaming Eagles would tie the game up as Howie Centre’s Kyle Farrell netted his sixth goal of the season going high blocker side on 16 year old goaltender Philippe Cadorette at 10:13 of the final frame, Jonathan Brunelle and William Carrier were awarded with the helpers.
After an overtime period solved nothing in which the Drakkar had most of the play over the Screaming Eagles, right winger Jonathan Lessard netted the shootout winner in the fourth round for Baie-Comeau as he beat Philippe Trudeau on a beautiful deke to give the Drakkar the 4-3 win.
Philippe Cadorette made 29 saves in the win for Baie-Comeau, his record improves to 4-1-0-1 while Philippe Trudeau turned aside 35 of 38 shots in the loss for Cape Breton, his record falls to 11-15-0-2.
The Screaming Eagles next game is on Friday (January 27th) as they host former Eagle William Cochrane and Florence native Michael Lyle along with the rest of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm from Centre 200.

CBU Alumni on hand: Cape Breton University’s student Alumni were on hand on Tuesday night at Centre 200 for the game. A number of Alumni took part in pre-game ceremonies.
Prendergast on hand at Centre 200: Hockey Canada head scout Mr. Kevin Prendergast was on hand at Centre 200 on Tuesday night scouting Eagles forward William Carrier for the upcoming IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championships which will take place in the Czech Republic from April 12th to 22nd.
Langlois and Rose play former teams: Screaming Eagle defenseman Mikael Langlois faced his former teammates on Tuesday at Centre 200 for the first time since being traded to Cape Breton during the league’s winter trade period, Langlois in the game did not record a point however did post a +2 rating along with two penalty minutes and four hits. On the other side, former Screaming Eagle David Rose faced his former teammates for the first time since being traded to Baie-Comeau during the trade period, Rose had a goal along with a +1 rating and two penalty minutes.
Cadorette’s shutout streak ends: Baie-Comeau Drakkar goaltender Philippe Cadorette‘s shutout streak ended at 67:23 following William Carrier’s goal in the first period. The rookie netminder made 28 saves in a 2-0 victory over the Rimouski Oceanic on Sunday afternoon. The 16 year old native of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec now has a record of 4-1-0-1 on the season thus far.
