Wildcats welcome back alumnus, Steve Bernier
MONCTON N.B. – The Moncton Wildcats are thrilled to welcome back alumnus Steve Bernier to the organization in a player development role. Bernier brings with him extensive first-hand knowledge of the game, and the tools to help our young players continue their development.
“I am very happy to be back with the Moncton Wildcats,” added Bernier. “I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge with current players and prospects, and help them to grow and improve their game. We weren’t able to bring the Memorial Cup to Moncton while I was playing – so it’s my goal to help the Wildcats and the great city of Moncton achieve that!”
Steve was the first overall selection by the Moncton Wildcats in the 2001 QMJHL Entry Draft, and is remembered by many as one of the top forwards to wear the jersey. Spending his four years in the Q in Moncton, he played in 271 regular season games, registering more than a point per-game with 313.
Steve was touted as one of the next top prospects, and would go on to be drafted in 2003, 16th overall by the San Jose Sharks. He spent the next 12 seasons in the National Hockey League, playing for six different teams while amassing 637 regular season games played and 230 points.
Following his extensive NHL career, Bernier spent the past three seasons with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers before deciding to switch to a career in coaching. We are thrilled that he will be returning to where it all began here in Moncton for this next chapter in his hockey journey.
“We are very excited to welcome Steve back to the Wildcats Organization,” added Ritchie Thibeau. “He will be a tremendous asset in working with all our players. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!”
In his new role with the team, Steve will work closely with the coaching staff as well as the players directly on and off the ice. He will also assist the hockey operations department working with our prospects.
