SEA DOGS SELECT D LUKE GREEN FIRST OVERALL IN QMJHL ENTRY DRAFT
SHERBROOKE, PQ – The Saint John Sea Dogs are proud to announce the selection of defenceman Luke Green with the first overall pick in the 2014 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft, held today at Palais des Sports Leopold-Drolet.
Green, 16, is listed at 5’11, 168 lbs. He played last season for the Newbridge Academy Gladiators of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League, registering 17 goals and 37 points in 34 regular season games. The native of Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, added seven goals and 18 points in 16 playoff match-ups.
Green suited up for Team Nova Scotia at the QMJHL Gatorade Excellence Challenge earlier this month and tied for the lead in tournament scoring with 11 points (three goals) in five games.
“Luke Green is a dynamic, offensive-minded defender who has NHL skating ability,” said Sea Dogs General Manager Darrell Young. “When you look around the QMJHL, there are only two or three right-handed defencemen with a high-end offensive skill set, and we wanted to add one that would make our power play hard to defend.”
Green joins fellow blueliners Alex Grant (2005), Yann Sauve (2006) and Simon Despres (2007) as players selected first overall by the Sea Dogs.
“He plays with some bite to his game, and he wants to be a difference-maker when he is on the ice,” Young continued. “He wants the puck. He wants to push the offensive envelope. Offence starts from the back end, and we have a defence that can move the puck efficiently – players who should be here when we make our run for the Memorial Cup.”
