SEA DOGS NAME VELENO NEW CAPTAIN
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs are proud to name Joe Veleno team captain for the 2017-18 season.
The 17-year-old from Kirkland, Quebec, is the 14th captain in franchise history. He follows Spencer Smallman, who wore the ‘C’ for the last two seasons. Defencemen Bailey Webster and forwards Cole Reginato and Anthony Boucher were named alternate captains.
Veleno is entering his third season with Saint John after being selected first overall in the 2015 QMJHL Entry Draft. He totaled 13 goals and 40 points in 45 games in his second season with the Sea Dogs. The native of Kirkland, Quebec added eight goals and 11 points in 18 playoff games en route to a President Cup championship. He also had a team-leading three goals and one assist in four games at the 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup. He has 26 goals and 83 points in 107 regular season games.
Webster, 20, is in his fourth full season with the Sea Dogs, which selected him in the seventh round (113th overall) of the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft. The native of Kelvin Grove, PEI, totaled two goals and eleven points in 57 games last year. He has three goals and 23 points in 149 regular season games.
Reginato, who turns 20 in November, was claimed on waivers by the Sea Dogs in January, 2016. The native of Mira River, Nova Scotia, registered 9 goals and 29 points in 66 games with the Sea Dogs last season. He has played 114 career games with Saint John and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, posting 11 goals and 35 points.
Boucher, 19, was originally selected by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2015 QMJHL Entry Draft. The Levis, Quebec, native had nine goals and 22 points in 66 games with Drummondville last year. In two QMJHL seasons with the Voltigeurs and Armada, he totaled 11 goals and 38 points in 122 games.
