SEA DOGS BLANKED IN MONCTON
The Saint John Sea Dogs (3-6-0-0) took to the ice against their rivals the Moncton Wildcats (6-3-0-0) in a Thanksgiving weekend matchup on Sunday. The Sea Dogs fell 9-0 after a dominant performance by the Wildcats top line and goaltender.
James White returned to the lineup after serving a seven game suspension.
The Sea Dogs were forced onto the defensive early in the game, with most of the action in the first period happening in their zone.
Moncton’s top line gave the Cats the lead with two quick goals. Alexander Khovanov passed the puck to Mark Rumsey in the slot and Rumsey fired it top shelf at 9:06, scoring his first of the season. They struck again at 7:17 when Jakob Pelletier carried the puck behind the Sea Dogs net and sent it to Khovanov in front.
Rookie points leader Zachary L’Heureux scored on a 2-on-1 play, sending a pass from Jacob Hudson to the back of the net at 3:24.
Shots at the end of the first were 13-3 for Moncton.
The Sea Dogs played a more offensive style in the second period, getting plenty of chances, but were unable to get anything past Charles-Antoine Lavallée.
Moncton’s top line struck again when Jakob Pelletier scored off a pass from Alexander Khovanov in front of the net at 13:53.
Jérémie Poirier was sent to the box at 6:41 on an interference call. Ben Badalamenti almost scored on a shorthanded breakaway but couldn’t get the puck past the Moncton netminder.
Moncton’s powerplay unit scored at 5:32 when Jeremy McKenna sent a sharp angle shot through Bouthillier’s five hole.
The Sea Dogs got another breakaway chance when Jérémie Jacob intercepted a Wildcats pass, but the score remained the same.
Matt Gould received a goaltender interference penalty at 1:22, sending the Sea Dogs to the penalty kill for the second time of the afternoon.
Shots at the end of the second were 34-15 for Moncton.
Noah Patenaude replaced Zachary Bouthillier in net for the 3rd period.
The Sea Dogs got their first powerplay chance after a holding penalty to Sam Dow at 18:43. The Wildcats killed the penalty.
Noah Patenaude left the game after making nine saves after having problems with his skate blade. Zachary Bouthillier took to the ice again to replace him.
The Wildcats scored their sixth of the game at 8:09 when Mika Cyr picked up a rebound and tucked it into the open net.
Jakob Pelletier scored his second of the game at 6:04, tapping in a shot from Mark Rumsey that was resting on the goal line. Jeremy McKenna followed quickly after, scoring his second of the game at 5:17.
Jakob Pelletier completed his hat trick at 1:36, receiving a pass from Alexander Khovanov in front of the net.
Shots at the end of the game were 50-21 for Moncton.
