Sea Dogs Acquire Three First Round Picks in Trade with Phoenix
The Saint John Sea Dogs announced today the acquisition of four draft picks from the Sherbrooke Phoenix. In total, Saint John receives a 1st round pick in 2021 (CHA), a 1st round pick in 2022 (CHA), a 1st round pick in 2023 (SHE) and a 2nd round pick in 2021 (BAT).
In exchange the Phoenix receive 2003 born forward, Joshua Roy.
“Josh wanted the opportunity to play in a different market,” explained Sea Dogs President & General Manager, Trevor Georgie. “We wish him good luck in Sherbrooke. We brought in a significant return for the player. Given the uncertain times, these selections give us lots of flexibility and the ability to add players in the future.”
The Sea Dogs now hold six first round picks in the next three drafts.
“The return for this player is very similar to the Joe Veleno trade with Drummondville in 2017,” added Georgie. “Picks are a currency that both our scouts and I value greatly.”
The return for Joshua Roy is the second largest return for a single-player in franchise history, behind Joe Veleno in 2017 that brought in three firsts and two second round selections.
Earlier this trade period, the Sea Dogs added two NHL drafted players – Cape Breton’s leading scorer forward Ryan Francis (Calgary Flames) and Rouyn-Noranda goaltender Zachary Emond (San Jose).
“Adding Ryan Francis adds significant offence to our forward group,” said Georgie. “He’s also in his fourth season in the League and helps balance out our age groups.”
Both Francis and Emond will join the team following their 14-day isolation.
