Mooseheads earn some hardware at Golden Puck Awards
2018-04-04
The Golden Puck Awards, presented annually by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, were held this evening at L’Étoile Banque Nationale in Brossard, QC. Twelve prestigious trophies were awarded to most deserving players and personalities of the 2017-2018 season.
Filip Zadina of the Halifax Mooseheads was honoured with the Michael Bossy Trophy for Top Professional Prospect by defeating Drummondville’s Joe Veleno and Noah Dobson of Acadie-Bathurst for the award. It’s the fifth time in the last six years that a member of the Mooseheads has won the award following Nico Hischier last season, Timo Meier in 2015, Nikolaj Ehlers in 2014 and Jonathan Drouin in 2013.
The Czech Republic native is widely considered to be a top 3 pick in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft following a fantastic rookie season with Halifax that saw Zadina score 44 goals, 38 assists and 82 points. The Mooseheads made him the 11th overall selection in the 2017 CHL Import Draft and he immediately became a driving force on offence. He looks to become the sixth Mooseheads player to be taken in the top 10 of the NHL Draft in the last six years.
Zadina was also named to the QMJHL’s 1st All-Star Team and the All-Rookie Team where he was joined by teammate and Halifax native Justin Barron.
Barron entered 2017-18 as one of the youngest players in the entire league, playing the first two months of the season as a 15-year-old. The defenceman was the 13th overall pick by the Mooseheads in last June’s QMJHL Entry Draft and impressed scouts and fans with his smooth skating and calm demeanor on the ice, making him look like a veteran on most nights. Barron won’t be NHL Draft eligible until 2020 and he’s already being touted as a potential first round selection. The young blueliner had two goals and 19 assists for 21 points and maintaining a +18 rating while often matching up against the top players on the opposing teams.
Mooseheads regular season leading scorer Otto Somppi was also nominated for a pair of awards but lost out in both Sportsman of the Year and Best Defensive Forward categories.
Here is the official list of winners:
