Big Trade Deadline Deal for Mooseheads
2024-01-06
It came down to the wire on Saturday, but GM Cam Russell made a move to solidify his team for the stretch drive towards the playoffs by completing a significant trade to bring in 20-year-old forward Lou-Felix Denis and 18-year-old import forward Jan Sprynar from Shawinigan.
The trade was completed in the final hour before the 1pm AST QMJHL deadline passed and instantly strengthened the scoring depth of the team in addition to the Peter Reynolds deal made three days prior to Christmas. The Mooseheads sent sophomore forward Reece Peitzsche, overage forward Ethan Larmand, rookie import forward Yannik Ponzetto, Moncton’s 2024 second round draft pick and a 2025 third round draft pick to secure the services of the two forwards.
Denis was Shawinigan’s leading scorer with 38 points on 18 goals and 20 assists which is already a career high for the Farnham, QC native. He has scored 89 career points in 170 games throughout parts of four seasons with the Cataractes and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Denis was originally a seventh round pick by the Huskies in 2019.

Sprynar joins his third team in two seasons since Rimouski selected him 30th overall in the 2022 CHL Import Draft. The forward from Zatec, Czechia netted 40 points with 23 goals and 17 assists as a rookie last season before being moved to Shawinigan in the Max Barbashev deal with the Oceanic in November. He has picked up 18 points in 39 games this season between the two teams.
The players will not make the Mooseheads debut tonight but will be joining the team in the coming days. Halifax welcomes the Moncton Wildcats tonight at 7pm at Scotiabank Centre. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca
