Mooseheads make coaching changes
2024-04-16
Halifax Mooseheads General Manager Cam Russell announced Tuesday that the team has dismissed both Head Coach Jim Midgley and Assistant Coach Liam Heelis from their duties.
“After lengthy discussions with ownership, we have decided to move in another direction behind the bench,” said General Manager Cam Russell.
“I’d like to thank Jim and Liam for all of their hard work and their dedication to the team and we wish them all the best in the future.”
The Mooseheads won the Maritimes Division title and finished fourth overall in the QMJHL Standings with a record 42-18-7-1 in 2023-24 but were swept in a first round playoff series upset by seventh seeded Acadie-Bathurst.
“Jim and Liam are both good people and we wish them nothing but the best in their future. This was a tough decision but one that’s right for the organization,” said Sam Simon, Chairman/Owner of the Halifax Mooseheads and Peter Simon, President of Simon Sports.
Midgley is tied for fifth in all-time Mooseheads coaching wins with 88 over two separate stints as Head Coach. He previously coached the team in 2017-18 after six seasons as an assistant.
Heelis leaves after three seasons on the bench where he coached the forwards and the power play.
The search for a new Head Coach and Assistant will begin immediately.
Assistant Coach Brad MacKenzie will return for his fourth season with the team.
The QMJHL Entry Draft is scheduled for June 7-8 in Moncton, NB while the CHL Import Draft will be held on Wednesday, July 3rd.
